I’m not nuts about the idea that soldiers should have more rights than the peasantry. But back in the day, before the 10th Amendment got repealed, it seemed self-evident that people who could vote, sign contracts, and use very expensive equipment to kill large numbers of people should also be allowed to take a drink now and then. Since then, nobody has shown me an argument to the contrary.
