Another one falls

Yee-ha! Ted “bridge to nowhere” Stevens just got indicted, for basically the same kind of crap they’re investigating Dimora for.

He’s a republican socialist, to be sure….but do democrat politicians get indicted for looting the taxpayers? What did he really do that all the others don’t also do? I’d assert you can’t even claim he was the most brazen.

(There’s got to be more going on here. — I’m long past the stage of believing that righteous outrage has anything to do with a decision to prosecute.)

Well, that’s not what he was indicted for of course; if that were prosecutable, I”d be buying stock in Wackenhut and CCA. It’s the same kind of retail influence-peddling that got Traficant put away.

I agree that it looks like something is happening here. 2 swallows don’t make a spring (maybe not 2 swallows…what about Spitzer and Dann?) but it does seems as if the Justice Dept. is kicking into high gear. I don’t think this is coming from Bush, but I suspect that somebody fairly high up is convinced that he needs to clean house to preserve the Republic, given people’s disgust with politicians. But this will only increase disgust, and any case, they’re going after retail corruption (“Fix my house and I’ll steer the contracts your way”) as opposed to the wholesale corruption (“Fix my house and I’ll VOTE FOR YOU”) on which the system is based. So I’m really not clear on what the game is. As the church of All Worlds would say. waiting is.

I don’t buy that for one second.

Ask the next 100 people you meet to tell you *anything* they know about a Sen. Stevens from Alaska, and I’ll bet you get blank stares from at least ninety of them.

Hunch: He dipped into the gravy-boat of somebody more powerful than he was, and now it’s payback-time.
