A Catholic politician actually votes pro-life

Rep. Ahn Cao will vote against Obamacare because of its pro-abortion features:

“I know that voting against the health care bill will probably be the death of my political career,” Cao said. “But have to live with myself, and I always reflect on the phrase of the New Testament, ‘How does it profit a man’s life to gain the world but to lose his soul.’”

Why doesn’t he have the problem that “good Catholics” Pelosi, Kerry and Kennedy have in being, well, good Catholics? Is it because he wasn’t born here? Or because he’s Republican?

He’s a Republican. Why would it be the death of his political career?

  2. Jeffrey Quick says:

He’s the firs Republican elected in his district since 1890. But yes, maybe he’s being a little histrionic here.

Read something last night that referred to him tangentially. It seems he spent some time as a Jesuit novice.
