Without taxes there would be no liberty. Without taxes there would be no property. Without taxes, few of us would have any assets worth defending. (it is) a dim fiction that some people enjoy and exercise their rights without placing any burden whatsoever on the public FISC… There is no liberty without dependency. That is why we should celebrate tax day.
Glenn Beck was quoting from this the other day, slightly out of context. If I were to put the absolute best face on what Cass Sunstein was trying to say, it would be that property is only sustainable through the legal means to defend it, and that a legal system requires taxes. Anarcho-capitalist that I am, I reject that argument, and find the statements ridiculous and appalling, but as an argument it’s not out of the mainstream. It’s just badly made…and do we want somebody that sloppy with words and concepts to be a regulatory czar? If he wasn’t making that argument, just WTF was he saying?
