Americans bought about 14 million guns in 2009, based on NICS checks. Maybe fewer, as it counts all NICS checks, including declined sales. Maybe more, as multiple weapons could be on the same NICS. And of course that doesn’t count private sales, which are a wash for number of guns in civilian hands. Anyway, it’s 10% more than the previous year. To put this into perspective, this is the equivalent of one gun for each of the soldiers in the 21 largest armies in the world.
